This exhibition is the result of a great friendship between me and Lise Sivatte, a French West Indian I met in 2002 when I became her painting teacher. Lise transmitted to me parts of her culture. She helped me understand the French West Indian people and their traditions, she taught me some of the creole expressions and songs, and she let me taste the Caribbean flavours. Then I found it was time for me to share with the others the grate discoveries I had made thanks to her.
In addition to the cultural aspect provided by the paintings, this exhibition had an educational purpose. Children from different schools were invited to see the traditional costumes, instruments and objects used in the daily life of the end of the XIX th century and further. The works of different French West Indian craftsmen and women were also presented on that purpose. |
